Privacy Policy

Effective 12 May 2026

The short version

sunnysips helps you find pub patios and beer gardens that are currently in the sun. To do that we need to know where you are looking on the map, and (optionally) where you are. We do not create accounts, we do not ask for your email, and we do not sell anything to anybody.

Who runs this app

sunnysips is an independent project run by Daniel Wise. You can reach me at dwisedevelopers@gmail.com. For UK GDPR purposes, I am the data controller.

What data we use

Your location

When you tap the locate button (or the “find venues near me” flow) your device shares its precise location with the app. We use it on your device to centre the map and rank nearby venues. We do not store your precise location, and we do not send it to our servers.

On iOS, your device will ask you for permission before sharing location. You can change or withdraw that permission at any time from iOS Settings → sunnysips.

Usage analytics

To understand how the app is used and to keep the service reliable, we record a small amount of anonymous information when you open the app:

  • A random session ID, regenerated every page load.
  • A random “contributor” ID stored on your device so we can tell return visits from new ones. It is not linked to your name, email, or device identifier.
  • The centre of the map you are viewing, snapped to a roughly 500-metre grid so we can see what neighbourhoods people look at. This is the map view, not your personal location.
  • A one-way hash of your IP address (we cannot recover the original IP from the hash). Used for basic abuse protection.
  • Whether your device is mobile or desktop class.

Contributions and feedback

If you choose to submit feedback on a venue, edit a patio outline, or report a problem, we store what you sent us along with the anonymous contributor ID described above. We use these submissions to improve the data shown to everyone.

Server logs and abuse protection

Our hosting provider records standard request logs (the path requested, a hashed IP, a timestamp). These are kept briefly and used only to operate the service and protect it from abuse.

What we do not do

  • We do not require an account, email, or password.
  • We do not store your precise GPS location on our servers.
  • We do not sell your data to anyone.
  • We do not show advertising and we do not use advertising trackers.
  • We do not track you across other apps or websites you use.

Third-party services we rely on

sunnysips needs a handful of third-party services to function. Where the call happens on our server, your device is not exposed to the third party. Where it happens in the app, the third party sees a standard request from your device (typically an IP address and a user agent).

  • Supabase — hosts our database of venues, patios, and anonymous analytics.
  • Vercel — hosts the web app and API.
  • Google Places — venue search, opening hours, and photos. Called from our server, not your device.
  • Anthropic — AI used to analyse satellite imagery and identify patio outlines. Called from our server, not your device.
  • MapTiler / OpenStreetMap / OpenFreeMap — map tiles and building data, requested by your device when the map renders.
  • Open-Meteo — weather forecasts shown on the time slider.

Cookies and similar technologies

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies. We use one piece of browser storage (a random contributor ID, described above) so that the app can recognise repeat visits without us learning who you are. You can clear it at any time by clearing site data for this app in your browser or iOS settings.

How long we keep data

Anonymous analytics sessions are retained while they remain useful for understanding how the app is used. Venue data, patio outlines, and feedback are retained for as long as the app operates because they form the core of the product. Server access logs are retained for a short period by our hosting provider.

Children

sunnysips relates to venues that serve alcohol and is intended for users aged 17 and over. It is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 17.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you, and to object to or restrict how we use it. Because we do not link any identifier to your real-world identity, fulfilling these rights typically means removing the anonymous contributor ID and any feedback you submitted under it. To make a request, email me at dwisedevelopers@gmail.com.

If you are not happy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Where your data is processed

sunnysips is operated from the United Kingdom. Some of the third-party services listed above process data outside the UK, including in the European Economic Area and the United States, under appropriate safeguards.

Changes to this policy

If we materially change how we handle data we will update this page and revise the effective date at the top. For significant changes we will also surface a notice in the app.
